Life on a thread

I learned how to sew when I was a child. My mother believed that every person should have not only learning, but practice in practical skills. As such I learned how to sew on buttons, turn hems, and basic garment construction from as soon as I could hold a needle.

My mother is artful, and builds not only precise, well constructed things, but has a sense of beauty. She has a love for form and line, and also is most capable at embellishing with embroidery and beadwork. I suppose anyone who sewed gowns in the 70-80s had to be thoroughly capable with beads, bobbles, and sequins.

A number of years ago I made a decision that I would work with embroidery. In the interest of keep this short – I started with beadwork and built a knowing in how to manipulate them. There is a magic in needlework. The weaving, sewing, beads like pixels assembling into greater impression.

This is a 6inch piece. I finished it with a sweetgrass edge as a hairpiece.
